To the editor:
When I think about the proposed recreation center, I'm reminded that it takes a village. No matter our age or circumstances, we are the village.
That said, in today's world of social media and influencers who think it fun to move children of all ages to mean, dangerous, and even criminal pursuits, there is a competing village.
Because lawmakers didn't, or couldn't, foresee these outcomes, no legal safeguards were put in place at the dawn of social media to deal with the impact this would have on children. The rec. center gives our youngsters fun, positive, programs and activities. Putting its programming in one cohesive and well-thought-out building is the safeguard that we, the village, can provide.
Life is different now than when those of us of a certain age were growing up. We don't see kids playing sports in the middle of the street with drivers waiting patiently for them to take one more shot at the basketball net or for the hockey nets to be moved aside.
Many of us remember being outdoors until the street lights flickered on – the signal to go home. Neighbors used to look out for one another's children when a parent had to be away for a bit. In many places, this way of life no longer exists and we, the Village, have to be in touch with this reality.
The rec. center will have programs and activities for all ages. It will make a difference in the lives of all who participate in its many offerings.
Just as the Council on Aging couldn't truly perform to its full potential until it had a home of its own in the Senior/Community Center, the rec. center will reach its full potential when it is finally housed in a new, safe, center that will offer programs for any and all of us who wish to participate.
I am delighted to be a yes vote for the rec. center and am proud of the opportunity to be part of the village that is helping to participate in its fruition.
