Letter: Rec. center is not a luxury item

To the editor:

As a local mom of two school-aged boys (second and fifth grades) and a resident of Newburyport for the past 16 years, I feel it is imperative to voice my support of the recreation center at 59 Low St. I would also like to address what I see as misinformation from the 'anti-recreation center group' that was recently formed. In my humble opinion, you cannot be in favor of Newburyport Recreation and Youth Services (NRYS), and be advocating against the new rec. center and/or the debt exclusion to fund it.

This project has been extremely well vetted, researched, debated, and years in the making. There have been over 50 public meetings and opportunity for comment and questions on the project. The project is not "ridiculously expensive" compared to other rec. centers in the region (i.e. Lincoln community center over $20 million, Billerica rec. center over $20 million). Directly in contrast to that repeated statement from the no campaign, Newburyport's proposed rec. center reuses a building to keep costs down. This makes it a very equitable option for our city, thus being fiscally responsible. If we wait, that will no longer be the case.

As for the Brown School, it was deemed unsafe (i.e. asbestos, lead paint, mold – in addition to no heat) and is no longer an option. Moreover, the proximity of the new rec. center to the present schools is ideal for our youth. Both of my boys could walk to the rec. center from the Bresnahan and Nock/Molin, and eventually the high school. If we built it, they will come!

This is not a luxury item for Newburyport; this is essential to our youth and the future of our community. The rec. center will not only support and benefit our youth, but the community as a whole. I am speaking out not only on behalf of my two boys, but on behalf of all Newburyport youth and members of this wonderful community that I am privileged to call home. NRYS is tasked with running high quality recreational activities for Newburyporters of all ages. Please vote in favor of the debt exclusion to fund the recreation center on May 13.
