To the editor:

As president of the Newburyport Education Foundation, I've spent much of the past 13 years helping to raise funds in support of Newburyport Public Schools. I believe deeply in the power of education and community programs as transformative forces that shape the lives of our children for the better.

On May 13, the city will hold a special election to decide whether to build a new recreation center and new home for Newburyport Recreation and Youth Services, and I urge every resident to support this important initiative by voting yes.

My own children benefited greatly from the programs offered by RYS so I can attest first-hand to the positive impact they have. From engaging activities and summer offerings to before and after-school programs, Youth Services has helped countless young people build confidence, form connections, and thrive throughout the year. But now, Youth Services needs a permanent home—one that reflects the value our community places on supporting healthy, active kids.

Since 2021, RYS has operated without a permanent home—relying on borrowed and makeshift spaces that limit the scope, consistency, and accessibility of its programming. The proposed Recreation and Youth Services center would finally provide a stable, purpose-built facility designed to support the full range of activities RYS offers—from indoor recreation and wellness programs to after-school enrichment and community events.

This dedicated recreation center will be a lasting investment in the future of Newburyport—one that pays dividends socially and economically. By creating a permanent space for youth programming, we're not only supporting the healthy development of our children, but also enhancing the overall appeal and livability of our city. Strong public resources like this proposed recreation center attract families, strengthen our local economy, and reflect the values that make Newburyport special. This project is a statement of civic pride - showing that we care deeply about the well-being of our youth and the vibrancy of our community.

This is a forward-thinking opportunity for Newburyport, and I encourage you to think big – this vote isn't just about a building. It's about investing in the well-being of our youth and the strength of our community. We have the chance to create a space that will serve generations of children and families—a space designed intentionally to meet the evolving needs of our youth and expand programming that is already making a difference.

I'll be voting yes on May 13, and I hope you will too.
