THANK YOU!
Newburyport voted Yes for the Rec! Thank you to all of the volunteers and supporters who made this happen. You’ve shown the true meaning of community. We’re incredibly grateful for every conversation, every sign, every vote. This happened because of you.

On May 13, Newburyport voters will go to the polls to approve funding to build a new Recreation Center and Gym across the street from the Nock Middle School. This building will provide a permanent home for Recreation and Youth Services and serve as a much-needed third space for the entire community to gather, connect and grow together.

RYS has been without a home for many years, which limits the vital services they can provide. Fortunately, the city already has the property and the plans - we just need to vote YES to break ground. It’s time.

BENEFITS OF THE REC CENTER

When the Brown School closed in 2021, Newburyport lost its only public gym and all of the classroom and office space for Recreation and Youth Services. The lack of space has forced RYS program cancellations and has left families and citizens scrambling for affordable alternatives.

SHARED
THIRD SPACE

When we vote YES, we gain a shared third space where people of all ages can come together — a public gathering place outside the confines of work and school that's available to everyone, all year round.

EXPANDED
PROGRAMMING

When we vote YES, we allow RYS to offer expanded programming to meet the growing needs of our citizens. The current patchwork of parks and spare rooms doesn’t get the job done, leaving vulnerable kids out of options.

INVESTMENT IN
COMMUNITY

When we vote YES, we make an investment in community that will pay dividends for generations to come — and we commit to a reasonable cost today to create lasting value for tomorrow.

The Rec Center is more than a building.
It’s a place where everyone belongs.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

The total cost to build the Rec Center is $8.29 million.

With $1.8 million in outside funds, the total amount the city must borrow is $6.5 million.

A YES vote allows the city to pay for the Rec Center as a debt exclusion, which means this borrowing happens outside the standard annual tax levy of 2.5%.

The total cost of the project includes:

  • • locked-in bid price
  • • 7% contingency
  • • 3% OPM fee for oversight
  • • pedestrian and traffic safety improvements on Low Street
  • • relocating the Parks Department

DID YOU KNOW?

Newburyport will finish paying off a bond for High School renovations this year, which helps offset the cost of new borrowing for the Rec Center.
